Solid black, black smoke, and black silver are three different genetic outcomes that can look nearly identical in a kitten photograph. Here is how each one is inherited, how it changes as a kitten grows, and how black European Maine Coon kittens are placed from our home near Charleston, South Carolina.
Black is the colour that shows a breeder's work most plainly. Weak pigment reads rusty in sunlight. A loose, cottony coat looks flat rather than dense. Ghost tabby markings that never cleared betray a pairing that was made for colour rather than for structure.
Done properly, the same coat does the opposite: it removes every distraction and leaves only silhouette — the width of the muzzle, the set of the ears, the depth of the chest, the length of the tail. That is why our foundation pair, Calhoun and Ravenel, are both solid black European imports.
We breed rarely, test before we pair, and raise every litter inside our home rather than in a cattery building.
Every black Maine Coon you will see advertised falls into one of these three. The tell is always the root of the hair, not the tip.
How to tell
Black from root to tip. No silver at the ruff, no pattern when the coat is parted.
Genetics
No inhibitor gene, non-agouti. Both parents must carry solid black for a reliable solid litter.

Hunley (queen)
Colour is unreliable. Smoke kittens frequently look solid black, and faint ghost tabby markings are common in all three expressions.
The undercoat begins to declare itself. Silver appears first behind the ears and along the belly, and ear furnishings start to lengthen.
Colour is stable enough to describe honestly. Kittens complete their FVRCP series, are microchipped, and go home at approximately 12–14 weeks.
Bone, ruff, and britches fill in slowly. European males typically finish between 18 and 25 pounds, females 12 to 16, with full maturity out to three or four years.
Ravenel's pregnancy is confirmed. Kittens from this pairing are introduced to Priority Waitlist families first, in the order applications were received, before any kitten is announced publicly.
